LOUIS B. COLBY | The Guardian of the colby pitbull Legacy
Louis B. Colby, the son of John P. Colby and Florence Fuller, was born in Newburyport, Massachusetts, and devoted his life to carrying on his father’s work with the American Pit Bull Terrier. After graduating in 1938, he served in the United States Army during World War II as part of the Signal Corps – Pigeon Section, earning the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon for his service.

Following the war, Louis spent more than forty years working as a salesman, but his true passion always lay with the American Pit Bull Terrier and gamefowl. For decades, he maintained the Colby game-dog breeding program, ensuring that its defining qualities—gameness, sound structure, and balanced temperament—remained intact.
Among the most notable dogs bred under his stewardship were Colby’s Dime (considered alongside Tudor’s Dibo as one of the most influential sires in APBT history), Colby’s Bucky, Colby’s Twister, and Colby’s Goldie. In 2000, the American Dog Breeders Association honored him as Dogman of the Year, recognizing his lifelong dedication to the breed.
Louis B. Colby passed away on July 10, 2011, at the age of ninety, leaving behind children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who continue to preserve the Colby bloodline. His life stood as an example of dedication, discretion, and respect for the American Pit Bull Terrier, keeping one of the purest and oldest Pit Bull Dog lineages alive.
