The Gas-House Dog, also known as McDonald's Grip, was one of the finest breeding dogs of his time. The only dog comparable to him in pedigree was McGough's Bob, commonly known as Bob, the Fool.

Sweeney's Fly: A Matriarch of Champions

Grip's mother, Sweeney's Fly, was perhaps the best female dog America ever had. Among her offspring was Thornton's Pete, a remarkable dog who defeated Jenning's Croppy and passed away immediately after the fight.

When paired with Gallivan's Old Prince, Sweeney produced exceptional dogs like Quinn's Tony and Harrington's Dick. Her final litter, with Burke's Tanner, included Gallivan's Pup and Young Prince, who sired Turk—the dog that triumphed in a legendary battle in Chicago.

A Tribute from John L. Sullivan

In 1914, renowned pugilist John L. Sullivan acquired a dog from the Gas-House strain, praising its unmatched quality. This event prompted a heartfelt response from May G. McDonald Mahoney, daughter of Johnnie McDonald, who passionately celebrated the accomplishments of the Gas-House Dog and her father in The Dog Fancier.
